Vol9. Samantha & her babies ～サマンサママと赤ちゃんたち～
ここ何年か住んでみて分かったこと。4月のオハイオ、雪が降ることもあり、これは確実にまだ冬。4月の終わりに1週間くらいの短い春があったこと思うと5月から一気に夏へ。夏のピークは7月。そして8月に入るといったん気温が下がります。時々震えることがあるくらいです。
これは去年8月半ば。奥の方にいるハトが、寒さのために羽毛の間に空気を蓄えてふっくらしています。

そして、9月に入ると夏がぶり返します。ここ数年、9月から10月の頭にかけて30℃を超える日も多くありました。そして、10月から11月にかけて1週間くらいの短い秋の後、長い長い冬の到来です。11月から4月までの6か月間が冬と言っていいでしょう。
今年も例年通り8月から冷え込み、でも9月からまた夏でしょ？と思っていたら、今年は夏がぶり返しませんでした。久々に秋らしい気候が長く続き、紅葉も見ごたえがあったような気がします。
We had a beautiful autumn this year. There is one woodchuck nest in the green bush on the left. They have already gone to hibernate this year. They are hibernating 2 weeks earlier this year because the weather is colder than usual.
この左の茂みにサマンサたちのメインのお宿があります。
今年は5月になっても氷点下になることがあったし、夏のぶり返しもなかったですし、実質的な夏は6月7月だけでした。
そして9月になってからさらに冷え込んでくると、ウッドチャックが姿を消しました…最初は、どこかウチ以外にいいレストランを見つけたんでしょ、と思っていたのですが、あまりにも冷え込んできたため…
冬眠に入った模様！
しかし天気に騙されたと気づいたらしく、その後来たり来なかったりを繰り返していましたが…
10月の半ばに完全に姿を消しました…いつもより2週間早く冬眠に行ってしまいました…
安らかに眠れ・・・

まだ小さくて軽いうちは、10㎝くらい登れるようなのですが…サマンサくらいのドスコイになるともう無理なようです。
同じリス科なのに…
Wikipedia says "Groudhogs can climb trees..." but I doubt it. I've never seen them climbing. I saw them trying to climb and giving up. Still... groundhogs are a tribe of squirrel.

バタ―カップ、トリーシャ、ベア、スシときて、この子は5番目ベイビー。目立った特徴もなく他の子と見分けがつかないこともあり名前はまだありません。
4 babies have names, Buttercup, Trisha, Sushi and Bear. But the 5th baby has no name yet.
雨上がりの湿気で御髪が・・・
トリーシャ、サマンサママ、バタ―カップ。
トリーシャは鼻の三角、サマンサはドスコイ、バターカップは鼻の右側にチョウチョのパターンがあるのが特徴。

そういえば前夜がけっこうな強風だったのですが、リスの巣が乗っかった細い木、それが傾いています。

人間が両手で持って行ったとしか思えないくらい跡形もありませんでした。
リスか人間か分からないけれど…誰かが再利用していてくれる…素敵です…(？)
ウッドチャックの可能性もありますね。彼らも土の中の寝床にこんなものを敷いて、そこに寝ていると思います。大人も赤ちゃんも時々、芝をむしっては巣に運んでいることがありますから。
リスの巣の中身は偶然見ることができましたが、土の中のウッドチャックの巣は、この先も見る機会はないんでしょうね…。だからこそ私は次生まれ変わったらウッドチャックになりたいと思うのです.。゜+.(=＾T＾=)゜+.゜
